The Coral Street Arts House is pleased to announce the opening of its second show on Friday, April 21st from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Investigating the process of binding and labor, CLOSEKNIT presents artworks that relate to the Coral Street Arts House history as a former textile mill in the Kensington section of Philadelphia. The artwork shown in the exhibition ranges from traditional to new media, fiber to video.
Two of the CLOSEKNIT artists invite the public to collaborate with them on their projects. Just preceding the opening event, the Society of the Unacknowledged will present a walking tour “Between the El and our Backyard.” Local historian and native, Kenneth Milano will lead the expedition through the beaten tracks of the industrial sites of Kensington’s old textile mills. This tour will include a brief history of human migration to the area, conversations with “old” and “new” residents, along with the childhood accounts of rough and tumble play in the abandoned spaces by the tour guide himself.
A second artist will be performing her "Displaced Studio" throughout the opening event. As part of her performance she invites you to bring a small object or swatch of fabric which she will transform for you by sewing it into a new object.
